The Role:

As a Principal Product Design Engineer you will responsible for the mechanical design, development and quality of Amazon Consumer Electronics products. You will contribute as a principal engineer on a product development team and influence engineering across multiple products and teams, including forward looking technology roadmaps. You will take responsibility for turning product requirements into design objectives. You will lead architecture development, technical problem solving and debugging to creatively meet those objectives. As Principal, you will often delegate tasks to achieve your objectives, mentor more junior engineers and raise the overall effectiveness of design teams. You will demonstrate the ability to guide cross-functional resources to accomplish your goals. You will play a role in defining processes and methods to improve the productivity of the entire team. You will identify and initiate investigations of technologies, prototype and test solutions for product features, and design and validate production designs that deliver an exceptional user experience. You will be an active member of Amazon’s Principal Engineer community with influence on how Amazon develops products now and in the future.

You will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, with expertise in systems integration; the desire to learn from new challenges and the problem solving and communication skills to work within a highly interactive and experienced team. Candidates must show a hands-on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts both verbally and visually. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments. In this role, you will:
  • Define and drive forward-looking (3-5 year) technology vision to ensure Amazon products meet or extend the state of the art
  • Develop research programs that map business needs to technology solutions
  • Translate these research programs into a technology pipeline to turn research into active product development
  • Feature design and testing to meet program objectives
  • Test failure analysis and solution validation to complete successful product development
  • Detailed part design and product documentation, including directing detailed design from internal and joint development partner engineers
  • Field failure analysis and solution evaluation for production product issues
  • Support positive team interactions to accomplish program objectives
  • Provide cross-functional program integration support to insure team success
  • Leading project teams to timely delivery of Amazon CE products
  • Schedule and milestone management (with the Engineering Program Management team)
  • Managing interaction with overseas resources
  • Applying technical expertise to problem solving throughout product lifecycle
  • Mentoring junior engineers in good product design practice
  • Networking, recruiting and developing great people who continually raise the performance bar

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or related field
  • 10+ yrs experience, consumer electronics product development (or equivalent experience in related fields with similar engineering challenges)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tooling and materials process validation (SPC, Cp, CpK)
  • Demonstrated design experience with high volume/high finish consumer electronics materials
  • Demonstrated experience developing high volume, low cost precision mechanisms (including mechatronics)
  • Demonstrated design experience in developing and integrating component modules (I/O, Cameras, Sensors, Displays, Batteries, PCBs, etc.)
  • Product validation experience (e.g. Shock/Drop, Cycle Testing, Environmental Testing)
  • Knowledge of 8D, Six Sigma, DOE or similar disciplines
  • 3D CAD skills (ProEngineer or similar)
  • Experience turning broad program objectives into actionable design initiatives
  • Experience leading and contributing during all phases of the project from initial concept to production ramp
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally with all disciplines involved in specifying and engineering complex electronic products (for example, Industrial Design, Product Management, Electrical Engineering, Design Integrity, Tooling & Process Engineering, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with early phase product development, including working with preliminary or ambiguous requirements
  • Demonstrates Amazon core values and leadership principles
  • Excellent communications and influencing skills via written documents and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Masters, PhD or equivalent experience preferred
  • Demonstrated team leadership, influencing and mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the technical efforts of teams engaged in complex multidisciplinary technological development
  • Engineering (especially mechanism) simulation experience
  • Mechatronics expertise
  • This position will require some international travel
