  • Job Description

Amazon Lab126 is an inventive research and development company that designs and engineers high-profile consumer electronics. Lab126 began in 2004 as a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., originally creating the best-selling Kindle family of products. Since then, we have produced groundbreaking devices like Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Amazon Echo. What will you help us create?

Work hard. Have fun. Make history.

    The Role

This is a unique technical leadership role where you will have the opportunity to influence, invent, and design system architecture across multiple product and technology spaces (Alexa devices, Fire TV, Tablet, Smart TV, etc.). You will join a team whose mission is to ensure that state-of-the-art technologies that serve the customer can be supported via flexible software architectures, SOC selection, and end-to-end engineering processes. To this end, you will see the big picture in brilliant graphical detail.

You will dive into ambiguous problem spaces and meticulously distill out design choices, trade-offs, and priorities. This will require working with subject matter experts in different domains (e.g. multimedia, graphics, computer vision) that may be outside your most proficient area of expertise. You are data and metric driven, and obsessively concerned about performance under resource constrained environments.

Because of the strategic and cross-domain nature of this role, we are looking for an exceptional individual who has the capability to contribute in at least two of the following domains: Android framework / OS, multimedia, graphics (performance orientation), and computer vision (embedded).

This role requires very strong verbal and written communication skills.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field
    • 8+ years of experience in software development in C/C++
    • 3+ years of experience in a technical team lead role, including experience mentoring other software developers to maintain architectural vision and software quality.
    • Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
    • A track record of seeking out and resolving system performance issues involving memory and CPU
    • Embedded systems experience with focus on Linux or Android based platforms such as game consoles, set-top boxes and Smart TVs.
    • Experience negotiating design and APIs with other software teams
    • Excellence in technical communication with peers, partners, and non-technical cohorts

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field
    • Experience working across multiple engineering teams to drive software design in a Sr. Architect or Principal Engineer role.

Also preferred is solid knowledge of at least two of the following domains:
    • Android framework
    • Multimedia: Experience with streaming protocols (HLS, MPEG-DASH), video playback engines, graphics compositing pipelines, H.264/265, VP8/9, and DRM frameworks.
    • Computer graphics (performance orientation): Knowledge of graphics APIs (OpenGL, OpenCL, or OpenGL ES or similar). Experience with performance optimizations for GPU architectures. Understanding of graphics benchmarks.
    • Computer vision: Experience with a few areas of CV such as motion sensing, object tracking, and face recognition. Understanding of DNN based approaches and tools. Deep understanding of how computer vision algorithms map to embedded / SOC architectures, with particular interest in tuning for memory and performance.

Lab126 is part of the Amazon.com, Inc. group of companies and is an Equal Opportunity-Affirmative Action Employer-Minority / Female / Disability / Veteran / Gender Identity / Sexual Orientation
