Principal Research Scientist on Video Quality
Amazon Lab126 is an inventive research and development company that designs and engineers high-profile consumer electronics. Since then, we have produced groundbreaking devices like Fire tablets, Fire TV and Amazon Echo. What will you help us create?

The Role:
As an integral key part of the camera team, this person will be driving the video quality improvement through system level optimization in a networked environment.

Modern video applications often involves capture device (camera HW), device SW, network transmission, receiver and display. Video quality can be altered/degraded at each stage. This person will have broad understanding of camera design, Image Signal Processing (ISP), video compression, subjective and objective metrics of video quality, and drive for global optimization of video quality in various use cases. This person will develop effective objective video metrics that correlate with subjective video quality assessment, develop methodologies to improve video quality for all Amazon device products, drive continuous video quality improvement for all use cases through design and optimization of HW, SW and cloud services.

Other responsibilities include:
This person will participate design reviews of camera design, ISP selection, camera 3A implementation. She/he will drive video quality alignment across functional groups. She/he will maintain broad connections with university video quality experts and drive future video quality improvement technologies.

Basic Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
- MSc of EE or CS
- 7 years of work experience with video systems or video quality measurement related jobs.
- Experiences in design and implementation of video professional and/or consumer conferencing systems
- Knowledge of Image Signal Processor and associated image quality tuning, video quality tuning
- Basic Machine Learning and/or computer vision knowledge
- Experience in objective video quality measurement such as Structure Similarity Image Metric (SSIM)
- Experience in subjective video quality assessment such as user feedback driven, or non-reference based methods
- Knowledge in video encoding techniques such as H.264/H.265 in a network transmission environment
- Experience and hands-on practice in tuning of auto-exposure, AWB and AF in the context of video quality
- Design and implementation knowledge of imaging control algorithms such as Auto-Exposure(AE), Auto-White Balance (AWB), and Auto-Focus(AF)
- Experience with image pipeline in still and video cameras
- Experience with programming skills including Matlab and C++.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in EE or CS
- Documentation and communication skills
- 4k video experiences
- WiFi and IP network knowledge
- Understanding of voice quality in a video conferencing environment
